Ms. Marilynn Sikes passed away suddenly on April 5, 2020. Marilynn was a valued member of the ACS Carolina-Piedmont Local Section, serving on the Executive Committee for many years, having been elected to several terms as both Councilor and Alternate Councilor. She was very active at the National level, serving on the
National Chemistry Week Task Force (2000-2003), the Committee on Community Activities (2004-2008), the Committee on Chemists with Disabilities (2009-2017), and the Committee on Meetings and Expositions (2018-2019). She was passionate about science education, being active in the Charlotte Area Science Network, performing demonstrations at Discovery Place, teaching science to Girl Scouts, and organizing the annual ACS C-P Excellence in Chemical Sciences Award at the NC Region 6 Science and Engineering Fair. She earned a BS in Biochemistry at UGA, and went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Education and a Master’s in Gifted Education at the University of Wisconsin. Marilynn was a positive influence on many people in our Local Section, and she will be greatly missed. A link to her obituary is below:
